What Is Neurowellness?

Caring for the nervous system that connects your mind and body.

Neurowellness is a broad term for supporting the well-being of your brain and nervous system. It brings attention to how you experience stress, make space for rest, and develop habits that support everyday life.

Your nervous system helps you sense your surroundings, process information, move, and respond. Neurowellness begins with becoming more aware of those responses and understanding what helps you feel settled and supported.

Understanding your body’s communication

Your body uses both chemical and electrical signals. Nerve cells communicate through electrical activity and chemical messengers, while other cells also use differences in electrical charge across their membranes.

Researchers are studying how this natural bioelectric communication contributes to development and tissue organization. For example, research in zebrafish has demonstrated a role for electrical connections between cells in muscle development. These findings deepen our understanding of biology; they do not establish that a wellness device can repair the nervous system. Read the research.

What does neurowellness look like in everyday life?

It can begin with simple, consistent practices:

  • Making time for sleep and rest.

  • Choosing movement that suits your abilities.

  • Noticing how stress shows up in your body.

  • Exploring gentle breathing, mindfulness, or relaxation.

  • Creating space for connection and activities you enjoy.

Relaxation practices often combine breathing and focused attention to help calm the mind and body. Their usefulness varies by practice and individual. Learn more from NCCIH.

Start with awareness
